Just when we thought there’s no more hope for the younger generation to have a role model to emulate among Hollywood stars and big names in the international music industry, comes Charice!

She’s adamant she owes her music to God. She dedicates her hard work to her family, and best of all, she draws inspiration from her millions of fans (and growing) in many different parts of the world. She may be a Filipino by birth, but the whole of Asia has now taken her as its own.  She talks about the pressure such responsibility brings, but she is also unassuming in saying that she sings only for those who appreciate and continue to love her music. Having spent time with her during her two days’ stay in Bangkok to promote her self-titled album, Siam Pinoy finds her more than just a Youtube phenomenon. She is, an enigma of her time!

Charice is the perfect role model for the next generation of girls and boys, for despite all odds, all the critics, and all the challenges she had to go through to get where she is now, she remains true to her roots. She is continuously grateful to all the people who have supported her along the way, and does her best to stay grounded despite all the fame.

People embrace her for she shows us all that dreams DO happen, (thus, the theme, “Dreams Come True” when Charice performed live at the Siam Discovery Center on July 23rd). As long as we are willing to pay its price in terms of hard work, sacrifices, and a tenacious belief that IT can be done, it can happen. That has been Charice’s life story from the very beginning.

Talking to members of the online media in Thailand just before her performance at the Discovery Center on July 23rd, Charice revealed feeling a bit pressured by the fact that now, she not only represents her country, the Philippines, but the whole of Asia. “Of course, I’m also Filipino, and I’m proud of it. Now, it’s kind of like a big responsibility that it’s now all Asia I’m representing”.

Charice has been called “The Voice” by no other than her mentor, producer, and now, her Godfather as well - David Foster! “A lot of people don’t know me yet”, says the now 18-year-old singing sensation from Asia. “And it’s like, you really have to prove to them that you really deserve it. But on the brighter side, of course, it’s really an honor to be given a compliment like that”, Charice muses.

She goes on to describe David Foster as a perfectionist, yet “comfortable to work with”, and “the coolest guy ever. He’s like, very generous.”

Having started her career by copying other famous singers like Celine Dion and Whitney Houston to name a few, Charice bounces back positively to outcries of others who say she is unoriginal. “That’s the hardest part…seeing those negative comments, but seeing those also make me think about my fans, my family,  you know, I’m always thinking about them. There’s a lot of people and hey, there’s a lot of people loving you. And the haters…They’re gonna come and I feel like I’m getting stronger. They’re like my strength, too.”

And as a tribute to all Chasters, her fans who are always there to cheer her on, she dedicates the song “Halo” by Beyonce to all of them. For Charice, her fans are like “my guardian angel. It’s like wherever I go, especially when I’m down, they’re always there for me”. “Halo”, says Charice, “is my all-time favorite song from Beyonce.” She later delighted all Chasters in Thailand by singing this towards the end of her performance at the Siam Discovery Center.

And for those who wonder which song she finds the hardest to sing, it’s also Halo, she reveals. “There’s like R & B stuff in there, which are really hard. But when I’m singing it, I’m always into that song. It really like, shows my feelings. I really want people to connect with it. I really want to say to people, ‘hey, this song’s for you all’. I want people to feel it. I want to say ‘Thank you’ from the bottom of my heart, by singing that song.”

And as for her mom, who’s always been the quiet force behind her early training as a singer, Charice has nothing but gratitude. “She travels with me all the time. My mom is always with me all the time. She’s always there to check on me. She’s very funny. We’re actually best friends, you know. We’re open with each other. Sometimes, we’re reading some tweets, which are like, negative. And she’s like, ‘don’t mind them’.” (Laughs)
At a very young age of eighteen, Charice already has the aura and maturity of someone who’s been in the music industry for decades. She sees hardship, negativities and disappointments as nothing but part and parcel of what one has to endure if one wants a piece of success. She believes in “try and try until you succeed”, and goes on to say that it’s the haters who will test how strong you really are.

Charice, during the meet up with the online media in Thailand, then went on to talk about her album, which is self titled. “’Nothing’ was first recorded in a much slower tempo”, she says. “But David Foster said, ‘I think we should do it a lot faster’”, and so they did. Her album is a collaboration with a lot of people. Bryan Rider, who wrote “Halo”, is also part of that album.

She co-wrote “Reset” and told David Foster, “There should be Tagalog words here. Filipinos are gonna kill you if you do it like that”, she laughingly added.  Charice confessed, “I do write my own songs, but I’m not ready to show it to the world.”

It may be hard to believe, hearing Charice sing live in Thailand, that there was a point in her life when she was actually scared to show off her talent. “I was so afraid to show my talent”, she says. “I felt like, maybe, the people wont like me. But then, that’s what I was talking about (earlier), your parents. Maybe I’ll give this talent for something. That something helped my family. Wait patiently and don’t be shy to show it to the world,” Charice advises those young singers who wish to follow in her footsteps.

And finally, the question everyone must be dying to know the answer to: has Charice got a boyfriend? And the answer is, “No.”  (Laughs)

She confesses that she’s “never been kissed” (laughingly). “I’m not ready yet”, Charice says.  “I’m enjoying what I’m doing right now. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking and painful, but I’m in love. Music’s my other half.”

More is in store for this young singing phenomenon from the Philippines, who now embraces the fact that she is carrying the flags of all other Asian nations on her climb towards stardom in the international music industry. She is coming back to Thailand in October, for another Warner Music project, the David Foster and Friends concert. And as of this publication, Charice, much to the delight of all Chasters in Thailand and in the world , is shooting several episodes with the cast of the extremely popular TV series, Glee.
