San Lorenzo Ruiz Award

(A project of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) and the Association of Filipinos in Thailand (AFT,UFT,CFC,etc)


Selection Criteria, Process and Scoring


Introduction

The annual Award is given to outstanding migrant Filipino workers in Thailand in recognition of their: 1) outstanding professional and personal achievements that give honor to the Filipino people and country; 2) unstinting dedication and commitment in service of humanity, especially the less privileged and marginalized segments of Thai society; 3) distinguished contributions in fostering closer relationship between Filipino and Thai individuals, groups and societies at large; and 4) exemplary life integrating their faith with their personal life, profession and service according to Gospel truths. In essence, these are outstanding individuals who have made a significant difference in the lives of others.

Instituted in 2009, the first recipient was Dr. Dominica P. Garcia who distinguished herself in helping the poor, refugees, prisoners and other less privileged people in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos through her medical profession and altruistic service.

1. Selection Criteria

The proposed ten (10) criteria consist of three clusters, namely: 1) demographic profile, 2) character and qualities, and 3) achievements.

1. Demographic Profile

a. Filipino migrant worker (This criterion includes existing Filipino migrant workers and Filipinos married to non-Filipinos and are now living or working in Thailand)

b. Filipino citizen/nationality (This criterion covers Filipinos working and living in Thailand who have changed their citizenship by virtue of marriage, etc.)

2. Character and Qualities

a. Integrity (The awardee’s personal and professional life is holistic and beyond reproach. It follows
the Gospel truths of love, honesty, justice, compassion, respect for life, culture, etc.)

b. Service-Orientation (The awardee’s focus in life is serving others to the extent of sacrificing self and committing one’s energies, resources and talents to noble endeavors beyond the normal call of duty and the ordinary to improve the lot of the beneficiaries, the less privileged,and society in general in Thailand)

c. Role Model (The awardee’s personal and professional life must serve to inspire other migrants to emulate his/her example)
d. Leadership, Initiative and Innovativeness (The awardee has demonstrated outstanding servant leadership skills, bias for action, pro-active attitude, and spirit of innovation to successfully and effectively try out something new and different for the good of the beneficiaries and society)

e. God-fearing (Despite his/her success, the awardee remains humble and attributes his/her success,skills and achievements to Divine intervention and guidance)

3. Achievements

a. Outstanding Performance (The awardee has demonstrated outstanding achievement and unique competence in the exercise of his/her profession and service to society)

b. Tangible Benefits/Outstanding Results (The awardee’s actions have resulted in the significant improvement in the lives of the beneficiaries and/or in the promotion of peace, justice and good relationship in the community and among Filipinos and Thais)

c. Recognition by Professional, Civic and Religious Groups (The awardee’s meritorious contributions are recognized by his/her peers, beneficiaries, professional, civic or religious groups through awards, citation in the media, etc.)

2. Selection Process

a. A 5-person Selection Committee is jointly appointed by heads of the sponsoring and cooperating organizations (SDB, AFB and others)

b. The head and members of the Selection Committee must be appointed by virtue of their
integrity, objectivity, sound judgment and professional experience.

c. The decision of the Selection Committee must be transparent, fair and above board.

d. The heads of the sponsoring and cooperating organizations reserve the right to make the
final judgment after due consultation with the Selection Committee.

e. Three rounds of screening by the Selection Committee using the above selection criteria
are proposed. The first round (preliminary screening) uses the demographic criteria
(migrant workers and Filipinos). An additional criterion is that the candidate must be
nominated by a second party (beneficiary, colleague, employer, et al).

The second round rates the remaining candidates according to the second and third cluster of criteria (character & qualities and achievements). A rating scale is proposed below.

The result of the second round is a shortlisting of probable awardee.

The third/final round will screen the shortlisted candidates in order to choose the awardee.

The heads of the sponsoring and cooperating organizations can attend the deliberations.
The highest scorer earns the award.
