Pagkaltas sa legal assistance fund ‘di raw makatarungan sa OFWs

MANILA – Dismayado ang ilang mambabatas sa desisyon ng pamahalaang Aquino na bawasan ang pondo ng Department of Foreign Affairs sa 2011, na naging dahilan ng malaking bawas sa inilalaan sa ayudang legal ng mga Pinoy na nasa labas ng Pilipinas.

Sa isang pahayag nitong Huwebes, sinabi ni Davao City Rep. Karlo Nograles, na hindi makatarungan ang desisyon na ibaba sa P26 milyon ang dating mahigit P100 milyon alokasyon sa legal assistance fund dahil sa ginagawang pagtitipid ng pamahalaan.

“It’s very disappointing to see that the Executive has chosen to slash by half the legal assistance funds for OFWs in the 2011 budget. This will work injustice to our Filipino brothers and sisters who risk a great deal to work outside the protection of our motherland just to provide for their families and help keep our economy afloat," ayon sa kongresista.

Sa halip na bawasan, naniniwala si Nograles na dapat panatilihin o dagdagan ang pondo na makatutulong sa mga nagigipit na Filipino sa ibang bansa bunga na rin ng patuloy na pagtaas ng bilang ng mga OFWs.

“It is unquestionable how much income and growth our OFWs contribute to the
Philippine economy. The least we can do to repay this debt of gratitude is by protecting them while they are toiling away in foreign land. More protection - not less - must be given to our modern heroes. Why must we make their lives more difficult? They must be made to feel that we are behind them one hundred percent and that no one will be left behind," pahayag ng mambabatas.

Sa pagdinig ng House committee on appropriation nitong Miyerkules, sinabi ni DFA Sec. Alberto Romulo, na P10.9 bilyon lang ang pondo na ibinigay para sa kanila ng Department of Budget and Management para sa 2011.

Hmmm......from over 100 million to 26 million legal assitance for 2011..and DFA's budget for next year is 10.9 billion as the DFA Secretary stated "Lang". I wonder if the budget is enough or too much. Yes, I mean for real OFW's or someone else's pockets. What do you think?

Uhm, ... WHAT? We had LEGAL assistance before? The gov't and OWWA should re-think that term. Ayon sa nakausap ko ay wala tayong legal leg sa ibang bansa maliban sa repatriation if/when we die. OF COURSE may repatriation, ano sila hilo? Bakit nila pro-problemahin ang bangkay ng taga ibang bansa. Other than that, wala tayong legal assistance.
