Re : New Philippine ePassport

In line with the Philippine government’s policy of strengthening the integrity of the Philippine passport, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) launched the new Philippine ePassport in Manila on 11 August 2009.

With the unveiling of the new ePassport, Filipinos now have the option of applying for the green regular passport, the maroon e-format passport or Machine Readable Passport (MRP), or the new e-passport. Applications for the green passport, however, will be accepted only until December 2009.

The new ePassport uses microchip technology which makes the Philippine passport more secure against tampering and unlawful reproduction. An embedded IC chip stores the photograph and personal information of the bearer in accordance with specifications of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The information can be read by chip readers at close distance. The ePassport also contains a machine-readable zone printed in accordance with ICAO standard.

In spite of the issuance of ePassports, all previously-issued Machine Readable Passports and non-Machine Readable Passports will remain valid until their expiry.

The price of the new ePassport is Php950 (or Bt2,700) compared with Php 500 (or THB 2,250) for the green or maroon passports. The price difference is for the more expensive biometric passport booklets with advanced security features AND new consumables such as laminates, printer ink and barcode stickers.

For the moment, however, the ePassport is available only in DFA Manila. Meantime, Philippine embassies and consulates abroad and the DFA’s regional offices will continue accepting applications for the green and maroon passports.

The new ePassport will be explained more fully during the Embassy-Filcom dialogue at the Chancery on 18 September 2009, starting at 5:30 P.M.

This is cool.... At-least, I can use Maroon pastport now and my bar code pa. Its like other nationalities.

But the problem is I cant afford the price here. I guess I have to go home nalang then change my passport there.

Thanks Cherie.

This is a very good question that you have raised sir. Sigurado na marami sa atin ang gustong maliwanagan tungkol dito.

The more "high-tech" our passport the more it becomes expensive?

Water proof a ito?

Di ba bago lang ang machine readable passport? Bakit gumawa na naman ng bago? Gusto ko lang maintindihan para kung may tanong sa akin I know what to say.
