Sixty years ago, on June 14th in Washington D.C., the Kingdom of Thailand and the Philippines signed the Treaty of friendship, establishing cooperation between the two countries, at all levels and in all areas. Over the years, Thailand and the Philippines have strengthened ties with each other from the highest level of government down to people-to-people exchanges. "The 1970s saw Thai students studying in the Philippines while today, Filipino teachers teach in Thailand" (President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, in her message on the 60th Anniversary of Thailand-Philippines Diplomatic Relations).

To mark this auspicious occasion, the Philippine Embassy hosted an event at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center last July 3, 2009. Present, along with His Excellency Philippine Ambassador Antonio Rodriguez and Madame Jannete Rodriguez, was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, His Excellency Mr. Kasit Piromya to grace the occasion.

There was a photo exhibit, an exhibit of handcrafted bags from the Philippines and an art exhibit by the world-renowned National Artist Manuel Baldemor. There were dance performances by Thai university students, one of which is similar to our very own, the "Tinikling". But it was stunning performance by the ACT (Association of Cordillerans in Thailand) which drew gasps from the audience, Filipino and Thai alike, with the ladies, clad in the colors of Northern Philippines, balanced pots atop their dainty heads while dancing to the beat of the gongs. It was a beautiful sight and sound display of Philippine culture.

The evening ended with a special performance by the Ministrels of Hope, a group of young female singers from the Philippines whose combination of love songs, popular Disney hits and others delighted the audience.

Congratulations to the Philippine Embassy staff and officers for a successful evening, Siam Pinoy joins you in celebrating this auspicious celebration in the history of our home country, the Philippines and our host country, the Kingdom of Thailand.
