Making Thailand Your Second Home

When one is about to embark on a new job and a new life in foreign soil, such a task could prove daunting. Rejean, a fellow Filipino who was having thoughts of coming to Thailand to make it her new home, needed answers to the following questions:

•    How much budget is needed for 1 month to live in Thailand?
•    Is sharing an apartment with a fellow Filipino feasible?
•    What are the benefits one gets as a regular employee in Thailand?
•    How much tax does one pay?

And the Siam Pinoy Community members obliged. Here are only a few of their answers. Ms. A says, one’s monthly budget will depend entirely on which part of Thailand one resides in. In the metropolitan areas, apartments cost from 2,500 baht up, water is 10-15 baht per unit, electricity is 7-10 per unit, taxi starts off their meters at 35 baht and the sky train (the BTS) is from 15 – 40 baht, depending on the distance you travel.

Ms. A further adds that sharing an apartment with a fellow Filipino is a possibility, advisably, with somebody you know well. Some employers provide free housing benefit, and an accident insurance. Tax is from 6 per cent. For those whose salary falls below the minimum taxable salary, then they enjoy the tax-free benefit.

Van Helsing adds: “With transpo, your best bet in going to the office on time will either be via BTS or ‘motosay’ (motorcycle) taxi due to the heavy traffic during rush hours.  But as Ms. A has pointed out, the sky train or BTS does not reach your office area (Viphawadee Rangsit Road), so start familiarizing yourself with back-riding from a motorbike. Don't even try to ride the famous tuktuk unless you just want to experience the thrill of it because you will be paying almost the same as that of riding a taxi, less the comfort.”
