“You are very important to the Embassy. You are our partners.” These were the words of H.E. Linglingay F. Lacanlale, the new Ambassador of the Philippines to Thailand, as she addressed the leaders of the Filipino community at the Philippine Embassy last June 7, 2010.

Fresh from her post as the Philippine Ambassador to Austria, as well as the non-resident Ambassador to Slovakia, Slovenia, and Croatia from June 2006 up to May 2010, our new ambassador arrived in Thailand on June 1st.  And within the first week of her post here in Thailand, she wanted to start on a good note by becoming familiar with the members and leaders of the Filipino community, with whom she hopes to join hands with, in serving the needs of the whole Filipino community in Thailand.

“No two ambassadors are alike”, Ambassador Lacanlale says. “Each has a different perspective on things. However, we agree on one thing”, she adds. “The ambassador is here to address the needs of the community”.

Having been assigned various important posts in her career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among them a 4 and ½ years of service as Consul General in New York, and being a recipient of the Presidential Award, H.E. Linglingay F. Lacanlale is poised to represent our country among the members of the foreign diplomatic corps in the Kingdom of Thailand.  With her extensive experience serving Filipinos both overseas and in the Philippines, Ambassador Lacanlale fully understands the diversity of Filipino communities. But, she says, “despite differences and preferences, we can still work together”.

She has been told, she says, that the Filipino community in Thailand, though small in comparison to the variety and populace of the Filipino community in New York, for instance, is very active. And she would like that to continue during her term her. “I would like for the Filipino community to be visible. I would like for the local community to recognize the contributions of the Filipino community,” Ambassador Lacanlale further adds.

Education, business and raising awareness about issues about the Philippines, are but a few of the areas the new Philippine Ambassador wants to focus on during her term of office in Thailand. She also wishes to meet the leaders of the community once again in the near future, “so we can sit down and tackle your concerns. I would like to get your ideas on projects we can do together. From our experience, we can succeed when everyone is on board. Hindi kailangang malaki and ating role or contribution (Our roles or contributions don’t have to be big). We have to have these small parts together. And if things are guided by the heart, we cannot go wrong.”

And so, as we start a new era in the Philippine government with a new president, we also start afresh in Thailand with a new representative government at the Philippine Embassy under the leadership of H.E. Linglingay F. Lacanlale. And it is then up to us, Filipinos in Thailand, to answer her call to be partners with the Philippine Embassy, to best serve the needs of all members of the Filipino community in the kingdom.
